I related to this piece on so many levels. I never believed in the institution of marriage, until I came to understand --later in life-- that a formal commitment could seal a loving relationship. Another thing, my first long time companion died of alcoholism. And it was indeed very significant to me that I could talk about it with my family and friends.
Beautiful! I really related to your description of a relationship decaying privately, from the inside, and the isolation that causes. I’m glad you found your way out (of course not without heartbreak). Thank you for sharing your story 💜
I'm so proud to have this author as my brother in law. Queer agency allows us to define love, marriage, intimacy, relationship success and failure on our own terms outside the broader culture. The way grief and hope are bound together in this piece rings true. xv
My. Soon to be ex wife and I were part of the Vermont Civil Union wave post 9/11 in part because neither of us trusted our family of chance ( aka biological family) to respect us legally.
We lasted 25 years- longer than either sets of parents.
Would I do it again? That's a question for the ages
Yes, These are big questions! And how do we honor something that lasted that long, while realizing that all relationships evolve to new forms? Anyway, I’m glad parts of my story resonated for you. 😀

Thanks for taking the time to share that. I’m glad you saw aspects of your own life reflected in the essay. 🙏

Thank you Brenden! I’m glad it speaks to you. I’ve seen myself reflected in your essays too. Let’s both keep doing this! ❤️
